How does the HP Photosmart D7460 fair in our test?

The  Photosmart D7460 works as both a plain paper printer and  a photo printer  .

Folding up from its top cover is  a 89mm LCD t touchscreen, which allows you to print  directly from the memory card reader  . The paper is loaded from the front and performs a 180- turn as its printed. Additionally, there’s a powered photo tray for photo blanks up to 180 x 130mm.

You can print to the D7460 via the USB connection,  or alternatively  it also has a network port, wifi link and a Bluetooth dongle provided as standard .

The HP Photosmart D7460 is in the lower half of our speed test results , completing the 10-page text print in 1 minute 54 seconds, or 5.3ppm . It took 1 minute 45 seconds to print the five-page colour test, just 2.9ppm. Although it’s possible to get a fast draft photo in as little as 10 seconds, a top quality print took 96 seconds .

And this is a  pretty good  quality print,  our test print had very natural colouring, colours were solid and smooth  . Definition is good and there’s little to niggle about. Colour print on  normal  paper,  is generally very good  . Solid text on colour background is well reproduced, though black text unexpectedly shows quite a bit of bleed into the fibres, giving a spiky appearance to  text characters  .

Typical prices for the six, plug-in ink cartridges gives a cost per page of 1.5p for an ISO black page and 6.1p for colour. The black cost is excellent , though the cost for colour is only average in this group .

HP ink cartridges are numbered 363 and come in the normal 4 colours plus light cyan and light magenta. Ink cartridges for the HP Photosmart D7460 are also available as compatible cartridges or some companies remanufacture the genuine HP cartridges.
